Elementary Education with Bilingual Endorsement

Who should apply?
Undergraduate students who are interested in teaching K-8 and have a high level of proficiency in the Spanish language, as well as a strong lower-division background in language arts, math, science, social studies, and the arts.

What is included in the program?
Teaching foundations, teaching methods, and student teaching.  In your first semester of the program, you will take a semester of foundation courses on campus. Then, during semesters two and three, your courses are offered at a local elementary school and include extensive classroom-based field experiences in bilingual and/or dual language classrooms. Semester four is student teaching in bilingual and/or dual language classrooms.

What grade level will you be teaching?
K-8 in bilingual and/or dual language classrooms, with a particular emphasis on elementary grades. Students are also qualified to teach in a traditional classroom with English language learners despite having the bilingual endorsement. In order to teach middle school grades, the state requires that you pass a middle school grades subject knowledge exam in the content area you wish to teach. Therefore, additional content knowledge is encouraged if students are interested in becoming certified in grades 5-9.

What is the completion timeframe?
4 years with full-time course load. This includes two years of general education and two years of professional program.
