Opening Borders, Surrounding Barriers: New Trends in Children's and Young Adult Literature and How to Use These Books in Classrooms

The Tucson TAWL group is having a mini-conference at Worlds of Words on Saturday, October 13, 9:00-12:00.  This professional learning opportunity will focus on trends in children’s and young adult books with a particular focus on books about refugees and immigrants.  Kathy Short will do an opening keynote around trends, especially the current explosion of books on refugee experiences. These books will be available for browsing.  The keynote will be followed by breakout groups that participants can move between. These groups include picturebooks and graphic novels on immigrant experiences, books on culture and identity, books on particular cultural communities, and award winning books.  Presenters will talk about trends with these books and have them available for browsing.

Registration for this conference is available on the TAWL website – www.tucsontawl.org and the fee is $10.  Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and local teachers are all welcome.
