Elementary Education with English as a Second Language (ESL) Endorsement

Who should apply?
Undergraduate students who are interested in teaching K-8, particularly to students whose first language is not English. Students should have strong lower-division background in language arts, math, science, social studies, and the arts.

What is included in the program?
Teaching foundations, academic concentration, teaching methods, and student teaching. In the first semester you take foundations courses on campus. Then, during semesters two and three, your courses are offered at a local elementary school and include extensive classroom-based field experiences in English Language Learner (ELL) classrooms. Semester four is student teaching in ELL classrooms.

What grade level will you be teaching?
K-8 in ELL classrooms, with a particular emphasis on elementary grades. In order to teach middle school grades, the state requires that you pass a middle school grades subject knowledge exam in the content area you wish to teach. Therefore, additional content knowledge is encouraged if students are interested in becoming certified in grades 5-9.

What is the completion timeframe?
4 years with full-time course load. This includes two years of general education and two years of professional program.
