Dr. Regina Deil-Amen is an Associate Professor who joined the Center for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Arizona in 2007.

Regina received her Ph.D. in Sociology from Northwestern University, where she enjoyed a three-year position as research director for a study entitled “College to Careers” at Northwestern’s Institute for Policy Research. The study examined how community colleges and private career/technical (“occupational”) colleges prepare students for sub-baccalaureate careers. The 2006 book, After Admission: From College Access to College Success, written with James Rosenbaum and Ann Person, details the findings of that study. From 2002 to 2006, Dr. Deil-Amen began her career as an Assistant Professor in Penn State’s Educational Theory and Policy program. Before joining the University of Arizona, she was a visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Research on Educational Opportunity. While there, with the help of funding from an NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Dissertation Fellowship, she was able to complete her longitudinal qualitative study of urban, low SES students’ transition from high school to two and four year colleges.

Her recent research qualitatively addresses the challenges faced by low-income and underrepresented racial/ethnic minority students as they struggle to succeed at both community colleges and broad access public universities. A recent grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation supports a new study entitled, “Getting Connected: Harnessing the Power of Social Media Technology to Enhance Community College Student Success.” This project implements social media plans in 8 community college districts in an effort to measure and assess the potential for such approaches to increase student engagement, integration and retention/attainment.
