SERP 430/530 Education of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals

The purpose of this course is to provide students with knowledge of the current issues in the education of Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals. Course readings and activities address the educational, social, psychological, and occupational effects of childhood hearing loss and provide a foundation for further study in the area of education of D/HH children and youth.
SERP 597 Issues in Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing: Supporting DHH Students in Public Schools
The purpose of this course is to explore the issues impacting the success of DHH students within public school programs. Readings and assignments address the roles, responsibilities, and relationships between classroom teachers, specialists (i.e. teachers of D/HH students, interpreters, audiologists), administrators, parents, students, and the community.
SERP 537 Language and Literacy Assessment and Intervention: Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
This course provides students with the knowledge and skills to examine and apply methods of assessing, developing, and facilitating language and literacy in Deaf and Hard of Hearing children and youth.
SERP 594 Practicum: Communication and Literacy.

The practicum provides students the opportunity to practice the assessment and instructional approaches being discussed in SERP 537. During the practicum students assess the language and literacy development of a Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing child and use the assessment information obtained to plan and implement an integrated program of communication, language, and literacy development.
SERP 539 Internship in Deaf/Hard of Hearing
The purpose of this internship is to provide students with opportunities for meaningful participation within a classroom or itinerant setting, to utilize the IEP process to determine instructional goals and objectives for children who are deaf and/or hard of hearing, to design lessons and develop effective techniques for teaching communication skills, study skills and academic content and to monitor and evaluate children’s progress on the identified objectives.
