Selected awards and honors include:

Appointed member of the Education and Communication Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, (IUCN), one of the most influential environmental organizations worldwide, 2009-2012

Invited as the Keynote Speaker at the Second International Congress of Business and Sustainable Development, Guaymas, Mexico, 2011.

As the Principal Investigator and Co-Director (with Professor Marcela Vásquez-León) of the Western Hemisphere Institute, Professor Arenas was awarded federal grants for over US$1,100,000 from 2008 until 2010.

Received a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research for research in Colombia, 1996.
