SERP 421/521 Introduction to Visual Impairment and Deafblindness
(Syllabus)
This course provides an overview of educational services for the student with visual impairments and multiple sensory impairments. An emphasis is placed on the psychosocial effects of visual impairment on the individual and means of adapting with a visual impairment.

SERP 523a Braille 1
(Syllabus)
This course provides the student with basic skills in literary braille transcription. Students will acquire competence in reading and writing braille; skills in the use of the Perkins braillewriter and slate and stylus are also introduced. Techniques for braille instruction of school-aged students as well as for special populations such as children with multiple disabilities and adults with an adventitious visual impairments are also included.

SERP 523b Braille 2
(Syllabus)
Participants in the course will demonstrate mastery of the Nemeth Code (braille mathematics) and use of the abacus for teaching mathematics to learners who are blind. They will complete basic activities in math and science braille formatting and foreign language codes. They will learn about music and computer braille codes. They will demonstrate use of the slate and stylus to write braille. Participants will achieve a reading rate of at least 30 words per minute in literary braille.

SERP 524 Methods of Teaching Students with Visual Impairments
This course covers assessment, methodology, and curricular concerns that are necessary for effective programming for students who are visually impaired and for those with multiple disabilities. Course content deals with specific teaching strategies and curricular adaptations that have been proven to be successful with the target populations. Students learn assessment strategies, both formal and informal, to use with individuals who have visual impairments including those with multiple disabilities. An emphasis on how teachers can make the curriculum accessible to VI learners along with a transdisciplinary team approach is stressed.
