Rehabilitation (Apply)

Ranked fifth in the nation by the U.S. News & World Report and CORE accredited, the Rehabilitation Counseling program prepares students for professional certification as rehabilitation counselors in public and private institutions and agencies, drawing knowledge from several fields to help prevent fragmentation and gaps in services to people who seek to move from psychological and economic dependence to independence. The Rehabilitation Education program builds on doctoral candidates’ unique prior rehabilitation experience and education to enhance their leadership, teaching, and research skills through a highly individualized program designed to meet their goals and needs for improving the field of rehabilitation in their communities, across the nation and even between nations. Undergraduates preparing to become human service workers will receive a comprehensive knowledge of the rehabilitation process and the service delivery skills needed to assist those with disabilities in achieving their individual goals.

School Counseling (Apply)

The master's program in school counseling prepares graduates to design, implement, and evaluate comprehensive school counseling programs that prepare all students for productive, successful lives and for academic success in school. Designed with the input of an advisory board of school counselors from the community, the program responds particularly to the needs of Arizona schools. It prepares graduates to be skillful in all components of school counseling, emphasizing collaboration with teachers, parents, and the larger educational community. The school counseling program is committed to the integration of teaching, research on school counseling and guidance, and active involvement with the schools and community agencies of southern Arizona. Successful completion of the program will lead to Arizona State Guidance Counselor Prekindergarten-12 certification.

School Psychology (Apply)

The University of Arizona School Psychology program was formally established in the mid-1960s in response to the expanding need for school psychological service in the State of Arizona and in the nation. The sequence of study in School Psychology is designed to prepare students for assuming leadership positions in research and practice that leads to the advancement of the profession of school psychology. The primary objective of this program is to educate a new generation of school psychologists whose central concern is the contribution of psychological science to the educational and emotional well-being of children and adolescents. The doctoral program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association, and the educational specialist program prepares students for the national examination to become a nationally certified school psychologists. Both the doctoral and educational specialist level curricula emphasize a variety of skills, including assessment, intervention, and consultation.

Special Education (Apply)

The Special Education programs are uniquely created by a faculty of widely varying specialties and backgrounds to offer advantageously specialized programs of study. The doctoral program prepares individuals through individualized study programs to work in research, administration, and college teaching. Doctoral candidates work closely with faculty and, according to the candidate’s individual interests, complete rich internship experiences. The Master of Arts program offers students unique and practical academic experiences, customarily field-based and with cultural components. The Master’s program allows students to earn an Arizona teaching certificate within a Master’s degree, providing a strong academic foundation in the principles of special education. Some programs also allow students to earn teaching certificates as nondegree students at the post-master’s level. The general undergraduate program in special education provides students with foundational knowledge and skills for working in non-teaching roles with people who have disabilities; undergraduates can also specialize in their primary interest by adding an emphasis to their degree.
